Salem Hospital, a not-for-profit Level II Trauma facility, is one of Oregon's largest acute-care hospitals, is home to the busiest ER on the West Coast, and is licensed for 494 acute-care beds. Our Palliative Care program is in its tenth year of practice and prides itself on being a true collaborative and interdisciplinary team. We are proud of the relationships we have developed, including strong support from the organization and a great community presence.


We are seeking a full-time physician to lead our comprehensive, hospital-based Palliative Care team.  The clinician will provide a dual role that includes consultative palliative care services to patients at Salem health, as well as medical leadership to the department providers.


Medical Director responsibilities include:

  • Work to develop and grow the program
  • Oversight of the medical services of the program to ensure adequate and qualified staffing for clinical service/coverage needs
  • Monitor quality of care & services and assisting in the development & review of patient care policies
  • Work with a dedicated dyad business manager and additional dyad Clinical and Operations leadership support
  • Implement education for hospitalists and specialty providers
  • Represent palliative care on hospital committees


Our evolving team includes providers, social workers, and support staff.  We provide care for diverse medical diagnosis to our patient population.  Our services include: end stage liver and renal disease, congestive heart failure, oncology, etc. Our broad scope of service is a direct benefit from established partnerships with many specialties within our organization, including daily access to chaplains and an ethicist. Our patients receive comprehensive medical services through our robust Medical Group of more than 250 providers and 16 specialties, focused on enhancing the patient experience and providing higher levels of care coordination. You may be a qualified candidate if you:

  • Are a graduate from an approved school of medicine.
  • Hold current, unrestricted MD/DO Oregon medical license.
  • Have achieved ABMS/AOA board certification in a medical or surgical specialty, and hold American Board of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (ABHPM) certification; OR have completed a Palliative Medicine Fellowship.
  • Have at least two (2) years of hospital experience in Palliative Care within the past 3 years.
